New Year’s Eve is just a few days away, and it’s time you put things in perspective. This is the perfect time to reflect, strategize, and be positive about everything that’s coming next. Naturally, not everyone’s excited about new starts or looking for a silver lining in everything they do (which is somewhat understandable given the current global social climate), but – there’s always something to look forward to. After all, what some people call “false enthusiasm” others call “hope” and it’s up to you to choose which of the two you’d rather be.

Yellow Checker Cab drivers seem to always be on the positive side of things – even when they are on call for the holidays. This time around, some of them have sat with us and talked about why working on New Year’s Eve isn’t so bad, what they love about working on December 31st and how to enjoy New Year’s even when you are working:
“I am a grandma to three gorgeous girls (even though I’m only 59, but that’s another story), and the entire family likes to gather together for holidays – starting with Thanksgiving and ending with Christmas on January 7th (we’re Orthodox). And it’s always wonderful! But, since I’ve been working on New Year’s for three years, I can’t spend it with the family. Even so, instead of being sad about it, I’ve turned it into an amazing adventure I later talk to about with my family and my grandkids.
Every New Year’s there are plenty of gorgeous girls in my cab, dressed up men, friends, families… and they always make December 31st wonderful! There’s something about this day that turns people into balls of happiness and optimism, and I absolutely love it! Everyone’s friendly, and you get to hear and see incredible stories from the passengers. Once, a guy proposed to a girl on their way to the New Year’s Eve celebration, and she said “yes”! It was one of the sweetest moments of my cab career! My granddaughters loved this story!”

“I’ve been with Yellow Checker Cab for four years, and all four I’ve been on call for New Year’s because that’s how I want it – it saves me the drama of planning where to go for New Year’s, who to be with, and all that. In all this time, I met some awesome people, heard so many cool stories, seen more drunk people than I have in my entire life, and had some of the deepest conversations ever. I love every second of it!
The most challenging rides are with people who were dumped on New Year’s because everyone gets into that toxic mood where they are like how can I be happy when I’m alone on New Year’s or how to celebrate New Year’s on my own, and stuff like that. I’ve been there, and I know how hard it can be…. But talking helps, so I talk to my clients! I try to help as much as I can by providing some insight based on what they say or by trying to encourage them to think differently and try to see the good. It works sometimes… Even those “difficult” situations are pretty amazing because you see the real, you see the truth. New Year’s always brings out honesty in people, and to me – that’s a thing to appreciate.”

“I’ve been a cabbie for almost ten years now, and I’ve spent five years on call on December 31st. The first time I was supposed to be on call on New Year’s I was livid! But then, when I took the first customer, I realized why working on New Year’s is not bad at all! People who book a cab then are usually very happy. They’re laughing, singing, chatting – it’s always exciting! Obviously, there are a lot of those who are tipsy or drunk, but they are always super funny and have the best jokes! Seeing people this happy, and this optimistic instills me with hope, too! Plus, you get to talk with a lot of people, pick up their good vibes, and it’s almost like you are celebrating New Years with a bunch of amazing people you’d met in a club or something. I love it!”

“Everyone’s so dramatic about having to work New Year’s, and I honestly don’t understand why! On regular days, cabbies hear the best stories on Earth, see some great people, get to talk to various characters, and it’s always super dynamic! You can, then, only imagine how spectacular things are on New Year’s! I once had a doctor pretty much bring a person back to life (the guy was too drunk and went unconscious, and the doctor (his friend) CPRed him and whatnot)! It was just… nothing I could’ve seen if I didn’t work on New Year’s, you know? It’s all about perspective, after all.”
